Dynamics of Flight
Keith Ferris

Kristin Hill led the audience on an adventure on a U-2 Mission. on the 55th anniversary of U-2 service. The U-2 is said to be the most difficult plane in the world to fly. Slides documented
Ms. Hill's the ground crew mobile unit, pilot "Beaver," Pete Van Pelt, and the extensive training, which included breathing 100%
oxygen for an hour to eliminate the nitrogen from the blood and sitting in a pressure chamber while watching the bottle of water next to her boil into
a volcano of bubbles. From 70 thousand feet aloft, she could make out Mammoth Lakes,
Half Dome in Yosemite, and a slight curvature of the earth. |
ASAA Founder Keith Ferris presented a hands-on session emphasizing the fluid nature of flight offering attendees the opportunity to analyze relative flight paths and timing
in planning a painting. Forum attendees learned how
to design a mathematically correct view of multiple aircraft
in flight. "The energy game is a smooth flowing
aerial
ballet,"explained Mr. Ferris as he pointed to slides of aerial combat. "It's important to consider size, location and distance from the viewer. Your canvas is your window to the world."

In a class on Copyright and Plagiarism Issues,
Mr. Ferris, with John Clark, imparted knowledge regarding reprographic
rights, transfer of ownership and the impending disastrous
Orphaned Works Act. |
Naval Capt. Rich Dann has been dubbed Captain Centennial for
his part in planning the Navy's 100th year anniversary. The captain
gave an overview of the history of Naval Aviation and exciting
plans to celebrate its centennial in 2011. The ASAA is invited to be a
part of the celebration with its 2011 forum scheduled for Pensacola. |
With sketchbooks in hand, artists prepared to gaze at a silent
artist's model for the artist's workshop. But this was no regular
artist's model. Gerry Asher, artist, performer and storyteller,
entranced the room with his poignant portrayal of a young soldier
while the audience tried to make quick sketches without shedding a tear.

Cdr. Ralph Wilhelm brought the original notes that he had written shortly after his experiences as a young man in World War II. He recounted tales of the Coral Sea, aboard the Portland in Guadalcanal, tremendous barrages in battle, orders to abandon ship on the Yorktown, and of course the historic turning point of the Battle of Midway. After reading passages from his personal logbook about top secret orders and eliminating the top aviators of the enemy, his voice paused before he continued: "This has been a day I will remember." The ASAA audience will remember that day as well. |
Youth Drawing Class
Priscilla Messner-Patterson
Held in the beautiful atrium of the San Diego Air & Space Museum, the purpose was to introduce aviation art to young people. Supervised by Priscilla Messner-Patterson, the class explored the principles of angles, values and how things connect, whether drawing aircraft, still life or- gulp - even dragons.

The day began with self-guided tours of the historic Aircraft Carrier Midway Museum. San Diego is the birthplace of Naval Aviation.
The day continued with an afternoon
at
Naval Air Station North Island, visiting a nuclear aircraft
carrier, observing flight simulators,
and spending
time with the operational Naval Aviation
Units on the base. Later that evening,
the ASAA artists were special guests
at a reception hosted by the Navy.
