Carl E. Jones is a graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago from which he received his BFA degree. Through competitive submission, he was awarded the James Nelson Raymond Traveling Fellowship with which he studied and traveled for a year in Europe. He has maintained his creative activity and was selected as one of twelve artists in 1994 and 1995 by Winsor & Newton for an annual calendar. Through exhibiting at the EAA Oshkosh art competition, Sporty's Wright Brothers collection reproduced two of his aircraft paintings.
